James Bond is alloted to help the deserting of a KGB officer, General Georgi Koskov, covering his escape from a show lobby in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia amid interlude. Amid the mission, Bond sees that the KGB expert sharpshooter allocated to keep Koskov’s escape is a female cellist from the ensemble. Resisting his requests to execute the sharpshooter, he rather shoots the rifle from her hands, then uses the Trans-Siberian Pipeline to carry Koskov over the outskirt into Austria and afterward on to Britain.
In his post-surrender questioning, Koskov illuminates MI6 that the KGB’s old arrangement of Smiert Spionam, which means Death to Spies, has been restored by General Leonid Pushkin, the new leader of the KGB. Koskov is later kidnapped from the sheltered house and accepted to have been reclaimed to Moscow. Bond is coordinated to find Pushkin in Tangier and execute him to thwart promote killings of specialists and heightening of strains between the Soviet Union and the West. Bond consents to complete the mission when he discovers that the professional killer who murdered 004 (as delineated in the pre-title succession) left a note bearing a similar message, “Smiert Spionam”.
Bond comes back to Bratislava to find the cellist, Kara Milovy. He discovers that Koskov’s whole absconding was arranged, and that Kara is really Koskov’s better half. Bond persuades Kara that he is a companion of Koskov’s and convinces her to go with him to Vienna, probably to be brought together with him. They escape Bratislava while being sought after by the KGB, traverse the outskirt into Austria. In the interim, Pushkin meets with arms merchant Brad Whitaker in Tangier, advising him that the KGB is scratching off an arms bargain beforehand orchestrated amongst Koskov and Whitaker.
