The second shot of “Childhood” copies as the motion picture’s publication picture: a youthful kid named Mason, Jr. (Ellar Coltrane) lying on his back in green grass, gazing at the sky. He doesn’t talk and there is no voice-over portrayal, so we can’t recognize what’s in his mind. Yet the motion picture is mulling over, not to mention a variety of other things, the momentary nature of presence the way that time, to quote “Life Itself,” sneaks past your fingers like a long silk scarf.
“Childhood” turned into the moment subject of media buzz a year ago when Linklater uncovered that he’d been chipping away at the venture for a long time, taking after the same performing artists (counting Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as the legend’s guardians, Olivia and Mason, Sr., and the executive’s little girl Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha) through the early piece of the 21st century. We watch the youngsters grow up and the grown-ups thicken and light black.
